Similarity: Opposing yet Similar Ideologies Spider-Man will always be Marvel's flagship character and Batman will always be one of the two flagship characters for DC just like how Mario is Nintendo's flagship character, Sonic is Sega's, Master Chief is Microsoft's, and any Assassin from Assassin's Creed is Ubisoft's.

The two heroes have the highest amount of movies and video games under their name (we'll get to that later) and their comic book sales, whether it be their own series or a series focusing on a side character, have usually been on top for both companies. The two heroes remain flagship characters for Marvel and DC simply because of how well kids and adults can recognize them and purchase the goods they create. While superhero movies have allowed the casual audience to recognize more Marvel and DC heroes, Spider-Man and Batman still remain the two most recognizable and merchandisable heroes in existence. Spider-Man and Batman (alongside Superman) have always been the most recognized and referenced superheroes in fictional history. Both heroes become distraught after certain events such as a loved one's death, but they both have a duty to not falter and not let the enemy break them. But another thing they share is overcoming these hardships in their lives.
That's something very similar that both of them share. Both Gwen and Jason were killed by the hero's arch nemesis in attempts to anger and lead the hero to a darker state of mind.īoth Spider-Man and Batman have formed relationships with people and have faced hard trials during their lives because of these decisions. Gwen was a trusted love interest and Jason was a hotheaded son-like figure for Bruce after Dick Grayson. Gwen Stacy and Jason Todd are excellent examples of this.īoth Gwen and Jason willingly became involved in Peter and Bruce's lives and were fully aware of the double lives they shared. Losing a loved one is a common occurrence for both Spider-Man and Batman. Yet there is something else that both the heroes share outside of their origins.
The two heroes have very similar origins with the same outcomes, but there were two routes that led to that same outcome. Whereas Bruce's parents were shot and murdered with no way of changing the outcome, the mugger couldn't have been caught prior to the shooting and Bruce became a victim of chance. However while the two events are awfully similar to one another, Spider-Man's Uncle Ben lost his life because of a simple mistake that spawned out of greed from Peter, it could have been prevented.
What do Peter Parker and Bruce Wayne have in common and what differs from the two of them? Spider-Man and Batman both spawned from two tragic events where young boys lost the life of family members, leading to a sudden change in attitude that drove the boy towards a life of vigilantism to prevent these crimes from occurring again. His butler Alfred Pennyworth would then become the guardian of Bruce for the rest of his life but from that fateful night, Bruce decided to train his body and mind to a human's peak capabilities. After leaving the theater, a mugger shot and killed both of Bruce's parents leaving the young boy an orphan after a simple mugging. Bruce Wayne was a rich child born into the Wayne Family and was taken to a play/movie one night by his parents. Thus, Spider-Man decided that with Great Power, came Great Responsibility.īatman, created by Bill Finger with the help of Bob Kane, first appeared in "Detective Comics #27" in 1939. He uses his powers to try and earn some money but after letting a burglar go, his Uncle Ben suffered the consequences and was shot by the same burglar. For those that are unaware, Spider-Man was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in "Amazing Fantasy #15", a comic in 1962 where Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider and given super powers. It's safe to assume that everyone and their grandparents know the origin and creation of both Spider-Man and Batman.
